House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen - Romania

Carol I of Romania, was elected Prince of Romania on 20 April 1866 and was the first ruler of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty, which ruled the country until the proclamation of a republic in 1947.
He started to built the Peles Castle in 1873 and lived there with her wife Elisabeth of Wied. They had only one child Marie, that died at the age of tree with scarlet fever.

Carol I adopted his nephew that became Prince Ferdinand I, he was a son of Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Infanta Antónia of Portugal (1845-1913), daughter of Queen Maria II and King Ferdinand II of Portugal.
Ferdinand succeeded his uncle on the latter's death as King of Romania on 10 October 1914, reigning until his own death on 20 July 1927. Ferdinand I married Marie of Edinburgh in 1892 and lived in Pelisor Castle in Sinaia since 1903.

Marie of Edinburgh was the eldest daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. Her father was the second-eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Her mother was the only surviving daughter of Alexander II of Russia and Maria Alexandrovna of Hesse.
In 1920 the Bran Castle bacame the royal residence within the Kingdom of Romania and was the the principal home of Queen Marie, it was decorated largely with artifacts from her time, including traditional furniture and tapestries that she collected to highlight Romanian crafts and skills.

The castle was inherited by her daughter, Princess Ileana, and was later seized by the communist regime after the expulsion of the royal family in 1948.
